The laws defining New York’s “assault and related offenses” are found in NYS Penal Law Article 120. Even a quick look at that Article reveals an extensive list of prohibited conduct, the commission of which constitutes criminal offense. Depending on the circumstances of the offense - like the type of conduct, the severity of any injuries to victims, the extent of any damage to property, and/or the offender’s and any co-defendant's criminal record - a sentence for a conviction of an Article 120 offense can range from a conditional discharge (no jail) all the way up to 25 years in state prison!

When most people think of assault the image of punching someone probably comes to mind. While that is a very frequently charged form of assault, there are a multitude of other types of conduct that fall under Assault umbrella and may result in a criminal conviction, some of which you may not even realize are a crime.

Some of the more common assault charges are included here for your reference. For a complete list, refer to Article 120 of the NYS Penal Law.
